Unexpected

Well, I thought I would update y’all on where I’ve been over the last few months.  We ended up moving right as I had my winter garden all planned out, I might add.  It’s a good thing and we are just four miles from our old house, but I can’t have a winter garden…or a spring garden…or any garden.  Boo.  We have only a small patio and it is in shade all day long.  I have searched to see if I can find anything that will grow in complete shade and have found a few flowers that will.  Any ideas?  I’m just not much of a flower grower and still prefer edibles.

How are all y’alls winter gardens going?  If anyone has any extra greens or beets and live over in the northwest valley let me know!!!  I’d be happy to take them off of your hands.  :)  After checking prices for organic greens and beets I know without a doubt that it was saving me money to grow them myself.  Do you know that it costs close to $2 for three little swiss chard leaves?  And it’s the same for three little bitty beets.  That is crazy.  Do you know how many I would have to buy to feed all 7 of us for one meal?  After having an abundance of it, it really stinks to have to buy it now.

Ok, enough pouting…I am SO happy that we are in our new house.  My kids have a really great playground just ten steps outside our front door plus a big field.  It’s so perfect for them.

If I figure out anything that grows in complete shade I’ll be sure to let you know…

HI, sorry about your non-garden friendly back yard. As many people have noticed, I haven’t done any garden tips lately. I guess that I have gotten lazy. Sorry! I am letting my garden fallow over the winter. It has been worked pretty hard for the last few years, so I am letting it rest until spring. I didn’t didn’t have much luck with my corn. I think that it was just to late into the summer and to HOT! for it to do it’s thing…It also takes to much room to plant enough to get it to pollinate good for an urban garden. I will not bother with it again!

My sweet potatoes are the same. They take up too much room for a small garden. They took over my whole garden. I got some sweet potatoes. One weighed 5 lbs!!! I hope that all of you at least planted something for the fall. I would love to hear about it!! Successful eating until early Spring..Farmer Darrell

Well that’s the pits Staci. Can you maybe do some containers out front? Swiss chard is beautiful and I bet most people would think it was an ornamental plant.

Hannah has a great idea, instead of plantng flowers in the front around the trees or in front of bushes, plant your goodies.

That is if you have the trees or bushes or in front of the windows.

Sorry no beets, the critters got my cauliflower, the turnips and rhutabagas came up but not that large yet.

Lettuce all kinds are doing great.
Chili and bell peppers still going strong. My Italian sweet peppers
were chewed down by varmints but have taken off again and blooming.
Don’t know how long this will last.

I’m still getting green beans off of my pole bean towers.

The carrots are still look like string beans.

The garlic is just right a little green at the top and sleeping under a nice bed of straw.

Beets, did somebody say beets??? I am just about to get my beet farm up and running again! My chickens loved it last year, and we ended up canning tons of them and are still giving away jars of them to friends and family. Unfortunately I am way out in east Mesa, otherwise I’d be happy to share garden space. I moved too, but I am going to get a garden started in my new place this weekend.
